CASE STUDY 3

When an Employee Needs Support to Work Effectively

The situation
An employee was finding aspects of their working environment increasingly difficult to manage because of circumstances affecting their ability to work in the way they normally would.

They believed that changes to their working arrangements might help, but they were unsure how to raise the issue with their employer or explain what they needed.

They were also concerned that raising the subject might be misunderstood or negatively affect their position at work.

The challenge
Knowing that something at work needs to change is one thing. Knowing how to communicate that need effectively is another.

The employee needed help organising their thoughts, identifying the practical issues they wanted to discuss and preparing for a constructive conversation with their employer.

The aim was not to approach the situation confrontationally, but to give the employee greater confidence in explaining their circumstances and discussing possible workplace adjustments.

The Work Resolve approach
Work Resolve provided practical, independent support to help the employee prepare for the conversation.
The focus was on the workplace impact of the situation, what the employee was finding difficult and what changes might help them work more effectively.

The employee was supported in preparing how to communicate their concerns clearly and constructively, while recognising that any proposed adjustments would need to be considered by the employer in the context of the individual circumstances and workplace.

Where appropriate, workplace support may also involve considering whether Occupational Health input or other professional advice could assist the process.

The outcome
The employee was better prepared to discuss their circumstances with their employer and approach the conversation with greater clarity and confidence.

Rather than allowing the situation to continue without resolution, they had a structured way of explaining the difficulties they were experiencing and discussing possible ways forward.

What this case demonstrates
Asking for support at work can feel difficult, particularly when the issue involves health, disability or personal circumstances.

An independent perspective can help an employee prepare for an important conversation; understand the workplace issues involved and communicate what they need more effectively.

If you are struggling at work and believe changes could help, Work Resolve can help you prepare for the conversation.
